Ellen Keane is a trailblazer for Irish sport and disability representation. Born with an underdeveloped left arm, Ellen never let her physical difference define her limits. Instead, it became part of the story that shaped her remarkable career.
A five-time Paralympian and multiple medal winner, including gold at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, Ellen has become one of Ireland’s most recognised and impactful athletes both in and out of the pool.
Her journey—from representing Ireland as a 13-year-old at the Beijing Paralympics to standing on the top step of the podium in Tokyo—is a powerful story of resilience, determination, and redefining perceptions of what’s possible.
But Ellen’s legacy goes far beyond medals. As host of the award-nominated podcast ‘The D-Word,’ she’s challenged public perceptions around disability with humour, honesty, and vulnerability. She is also a published author (Perfectly Imperfect), a qualified yoga teacher, and a passionate advocate for body confidence, inclusion, and mental wellbeing.
Her influence extends across sport, media, and social campaigns. Ellen was a finalist on Dancing with the Stars Ireland, using the platform to highlight disability representation in mainstream entertainment, and was awarded the Lord Mayor’s Award for her contribution to Irish society.
In 2025, Ellen pushed her limits further by appearing on RTÉ’s outdoor adventure series Uncharted, taking on extreme physical and mental challenges far outside her comfort zone—offering audiences an even deeper view of her determination and adaptability. She was also announced as the latest Ireland’s Fittest Family Coach.
